Catching up on the News

1 - Cyberwar - according to the CIA North American power company systems have been hacked. Now there's a cheery thought on a dark and stormy night.

2 - Transparency - in all the hoopla about big money during elections, and the demand for transparency, we forget about public-sector unions. At least one group wants to see some transparency from the unions. Evidently they are as opaque as the corporations they love to bash. Would that be a 'pot meet kettle' moment?

3 - The Gospel According to Matt - An easy to read article about Matt Simmons, why he believes what he does, and what his opponents have to say. Also, some additional feedback from 2 members of The Oil Drum. What I find most interesting about Simmons is that he is a dyed-in-the-wool Republican, who could just sit back and make money, rather than travel the planet preaching doom and gloom.

4 - Shell Gazes Into the Crystal Ball - Jerome van der Veer is Shell's Chief Executive, and a new prophet for change. Key paragraph for the Peak Oilers in the room:

Regardless of which route we choose, the world’s current predicament limits our room to maneuver. We are experiencing a step-change in the growth rate of energy demand due to rising population and economic development. After 2015, easily accessible supplies of oil and gas probably will no longer keep up with demand.

And remember what Shell's business is....oil and gas. Read what he has to say about the future, he is to the point.

5 - Crude Awakening - Now here's a something you won't find at the local multiplex. I understand it is on cable, History Channel I do believe.

6 - Rezko Jailed - Looks like Rezko wasn't all that forthcoming about his finances. This is Chicago, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

7 - Allegation of Voter Fraud - Imagine That! The alleged fraud involves the 50th Ward, but I think the potential exists elsewhere in the city.
