Dancing With The Congresscritters

Rep. Barton (R-Tx) apologized to BP for the "shakedown" in the White House to create the "slush fund." This was a reference to the $20B escrow to make whole the Gulf citizens and businesses harmed by the spill. At some point during a recess someone got to him, and he read into the record a statement that essentially took back what he said. D or R, they all know how to dance. Let's put them on Dancing With The Stars.

Barton's apology disgusted me so much, I had to quit listening. What, exactly, was there to apologize FOR?

Why should BP not be made liable for damages? If I neglect my car and the brakes fail, causing me to jump the curb and pile into a building and kill a few people and do $300K damage, am I not liable? Does my ignorance of my car's deficiencies let me off the hook?
