According to Irshad Manji the problem is Islam itself. Those of you not familiar with Irshad then get thee hence to Muslim Refusenik. It's easy to believe that Muslims are just a huge monolithic block of believers in a dangerous and hate filled religion. Irshad has tapped a vein of dissent that I don't think we pay enough attention to because it is highly nuanced.
Irshad is also a lesbian, which all by itself sets the teeth of most Muslims on edge. The level of denial in the community is amazing, but perhaps not given our own past and present. She has been criticized roundly for not having her facts totally straight, but she certainly has challenged many in the Islamic community.
