I just hiked on over to the Board of Elections and as of 9:28 PM the race is tight.
Alderman 49th Ward 27 of 42 precincts counted 64.29%
Joe Moore 2,321 48.58%
Don Gordon 2,457 51.42%
Total 4,778
The average is 177 votes per precinct, so straightline math says we'll see just under 7,500 voters if that trend holds true.
One thing I have noticed, the 49th is bringing up the rear in the counts, we are 5 points behind the 35th in number of precincts counted. Interesting but don't know if it means anything.
I think I will be surprised if either candidate pulls away to win by a significant amount. The winner, and it looks to be Gordon right now, can rightfully celebrate the victory but needs to be mindful that a fairly large group of people remain unconvinced. Actions speak louder than words, as Gordon often said. His actions will determine if he is a one-term wonder or a real leader.
Moore may yet pull this off as there remains 15 precincts to count. That said, I think it likely that Joe Moore's wakeup call came too late and the plane had already left the gate by the time he was ready to climb on board. We'll know for sure in the morning.
