I recall that as a child there was a phrase that made the rounds, "it takes kidneys." It was the early equivalent of cojones. We are about to find out just how much in the way of cojones Elizabeth Edwards has. I looked up her disease. She will need followup and treatment the rest of her life, but she does have a life ahead of her. Forty years ago we couldn't even suggest the possibility.
Presidential campaigns are tough, bruising competitions, which make our aldermanic contests look puny in comparison. Spouses of candidates are more thoroughly vetted by nosy journalists than an alderman's daughter will ever be. The vultures, complete with cameras, mikes, and notebooks, will be circling every moment, watching for that sign of weakness signaling the game is over. Anyone living in that fishbowl has to know: it takes kidneys. I hope she has strong ones.
