The Europeans have figured out that Russia is not necessarily a reliable partner in terms of energy supplies, and America is about to get its head handed to it when Mexico's Cantarell field crashes and burns. For a brief moment the Europeans got a reminder that oil is not guaranteed, and the Americans will be reminded very soon that cheap oil is not a constitutional right.

Right now, the forecast is that oil production will Peak, at its highest level, sometime in 2009. Are they right? Time will tell. The ongoing increase in world population, coupled with the rising demand in India and China, is going to strain the ability of all countries to get the oil they need. Those countries that haven't moved to other sources, whether renewable or nuclear, are going to be in a world of hurt. America among them.
Hirsch stated in his report that trillions of dollars spent over a 20 year period for a crash program that was our number one priority would be required to avoid shortages. We haven't started. We aren't ready.

Kunstler and Heinberg (Last Man Standing)could be right. Then again, we might all get our act together and deal with this.
It's information like this which causes me to lose patience with political leaders and wannabes who are all about the votes. Those votes are largely from folks who are happily snoozing through reality, secure in their faith that someone else will figure it all out and fix the problem.
